friday book review and yet more about teeth
The book: I am reading Wool by Hugh Howey which is completely un-put-able-down-able.
If you loved The Passage or The Twelve you WILL love this.
No vampirish creatures, just thousands of people living in an underground silo because fresh air has disappeared due to pollution.Generations have lived this way - then it all starts Going Wrong.
The way these writers of post-apocalyptic fiction ( science fiction?) create whole worlds of history, culture and civilization just amazes and impresses me so much. I get totally lost in the plots. Fabulous reading.
I've spent a lot of time reading over the last couple of days while also tending to my poor girl.
Her four wisdom teeth came out on Wednesday.
This was all good and straightforward: into hospital at 7.00 a.m, surgery at 9.00 a.m., sitting up cracking jokes and eating an icy-pole by 11.15 a.m., home again by 12.30.
She spent the afternoon watching a movie with her boyfriend here on the couch, reading magazines:
had another icy-pole, apple juice, a small bowl of soup, a Milo cup (ice cream). Cheerful. Went to bed after taking two pain killers, slept until 6, took 2 more, back to sleep until 10.
Then the poor thing proceeded to have a terrible day: she could keep NOTHING down, until 7.30 last night she managed half a Weetbix ( made into baby food with milk).
She is still asleep. Hope today is better for her. Doesn't matter if your kid is nine days old, nine years or nearly 19, it's horrible to see them so miserable and in pain.

Oh, poor girl :( I can remember being in a lot of pain but I didn't want to mention too much of that to you pre-op. Hope she feels much better soon.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably a reaction to the anaesthetic, which can do weird things to the mind also. After my wisdom teeth were taken out, I had the same thing, plus strange druggy dreams. I woke up at 2.00 one morning and couldn't remember who I was! I knew where I was and that I was totally safe, but ask me my name and I couldn't have told you. Hope she feels better soon. Try apples stewed with a little sugar; they have a lot of water, freshen the mouth and don't have fats so they won't make her feel nauseous. A nurse once told me this when my mother was ill, and I've found it good advice.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the book recommendation- I think "Post Apocalyptic" might be my new favourite genre. Have you read "Riddley Walker" by Russell Hoban?
ReplyDeleteHope the teeth are better, it was a HUGE relief when the dentist told me that my wisdom teeth were not going to have to come out.
I had a similar experience with my wisdom teeth a few years back with the nausea hitting after a day or two, I agree that it is probably the anaesthetic. Lemonade icey poles are the best!
ReplyDeleteI also find that codeine based painkillers (panadeine etc) make we really woosey and after I switched to panadol and/or an anti-inflam I felt much better.
What about boring old jelly?
ReplyDeleteMaybe she's having a reaction to her pain medication (see Sofia) it sounds like it could be that...same thing happened to me. I hope she's feeling better today.
