a foodie resolution

A personal goal for this year is to not eat meat every day of the week. I do love vego meals and would like to master more of them. Due to my crappy kidneys it would be better for me to eat  less protein so I'm keen to try.

We are unashamed and unembarrassed carnivores here, and our teenage boy doesn't regard a meal as a meal unless there's a meaty element, but I would like to have one night a week off - for me, anyway.  There'll be some experimenting to come up with vego and meaty versions of the same meal.

Daughter doesn't like meat much and only eats small amounts so she will be in with me. She begged the meatless day NOT to be Monday - she said "Meatless Monday" sounded like a lesbian theme night at our local very skanky nightclub.

So last night was night one: my husband made his very beautiful pizzas - I normally just have a pesto pizza, but last night had pesto, loads of roasted capsicum strips ( from a jar) and some little pieces of haloumi cheese. It was delicious and very filling. I could only eat two pieces. Interestingly, all the rest was scoffed and some of the meatier pizza was left over.

I'll record my vego meals in this blog. Maybe over a year I can convert all four of us so it's a permanent change.

  1. Yay. My smaller portion beiieves, like my youngest brother, that vegetables are the garnish put on the plate to make the meat look better. Given his druthers the only vegetables he consumes are potatoes, tomatoes and onion (honourary meat).
I love my vegetarian meals and wish you luck - for yourself and the rest of your family.
PS: I am still snickering at Meatless Monday. Thank you.

  2. Hah! I'm making the opposite resolution - more meat for Grace and I. Like maybe three or four nights a week.

Last night I made cous cous with lots of mushrooms to keep Gerard happy and he had his with an egg and we had rare steak in strips over the top. Making something that is a good vego meal and then serving simple grilled meat as a side works for us. Or sometimes I do pasta with two sauces eg bean sauce (which I don't like much) and meat sauce and freeze enough for a second meal.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  3. Good thinking. I opt for meatless a lot of times, particularly when we order pizza, much to the amusement of The Others. I love olives, jalapenos, feta and pumpkin on pizza. One of son's part time jobs is at a pizza place (one of the more boutique type ones thankfully). So we are having enforced pizza nights as he gets some ridiculous discount. sigh... I hope this partic. job doesn't continue for too long. Will be interested (as always) in following your new challenge. cheers Wendy
