note to myself about buying op-shop books

This month, there were lots of books in the boxes that went off to charity, and all of it was fiction. Almost all were op-shop purchases. I seem to have fallen into an idiotic habit of seeing a novel in an op-shop,a book I've already read 6 months earlier, a year before, two years ago and thinking:

oh, I really enjoyed that,I'll read it again some day, better pick up a copy, it's only a couple of dollars...

What's wrong with this picture?

I just DON'T get around to re-reading. There are too many books coming out every day, week, month for me to do much re-reading except for really, really old favourites, so why do I think I'm going to read ephemeral fiction again?

Note to myself - if you buy an op-shop novel make it something you have never read and always meant to. Leave the others for someone else. Please.

(Had a series of rude, argumentative, unco-operative and just plain weird people on the phone at work this morning, so I'm as exhausted as if I've done a full day's work instead of four measly hours).

(First fire of the autumn pictured. Sunday night. Wasn't even autumn yet!)

  1. I sat and shivered on Sunday night. The mister wouldn't let me light the fire because he'd just reblacked it the weekend before and it would be "too demoralising" to let it get dirty so soon.

(I told him next time I clean the toilet I'm not going to let him use it for a week. That'll learn him).

  2. I know what you mean with the books. I seem to make the mistake of buying books (bookshop/op shop/markets/ebay) that I wouldn't normally read but feel that I should read. Then I put said books away into bookcase with the intent of reading them when on holiday or when I have more time. However, they are never read because like you I always have something else on the go - something newer or more interesting. So they sit.

  3. We have been having really suitable weather for a wood stove here in Queensland - but alas we only moved up here a month ago and haven't ordered in wood yet. Instead, I have been enviously watching the smoke rise from our next door neighbours chimney.

In terms of books - I know your pain. I am particularly bad when I go to the big lifeline book markets. Last time I bought 15-20 Agatha Christies - its not like I couldn't easily pick them up through the library system if I wanted to, and with space on our book shelves at a premium they will probably have to go as soon as they are read.

  4. PLB, there is going to be a post soon about the (near) OCD of the wood collector who lives with me...
So we have enough wood, possibly, to have a fire 365 days of the year.
