possible holiday reading?

At op-shops this year I've collected a few things I'd like to read and wonder if any reader has an opinion on any of them?
They are:

1. Just like that - Lily Brett ( I loved "Too Many Men")
2. Why shoot a butler? - Georgette Heyer ( never read anything by her, heard lots)
3. Pompeii - Robert Harris ( went to the exhibition, so.....?)
4. Highland fling/Christmas pudding/Pigeon pie - Nancy Mitford
( adore Love in a cold climate etc)
5.The world below - Sue Miller ( enjoyed another by her, can't recall title)

Of course I could always just take two old favourites I've read lots of times, and know each time they will be just fabulous - The Secret History by Donna Tartt or my all time cosy book I first read aged 17:

Can't take this beautiful boy on holidays as much as I would like to sneak him into a suitcase.

Tomorrow will be a mad day of driving from one side of Melbourne to another.
At some stage in the afternoon I'm hoping to end up in Gertrude Street to visit a favourite shop to buy my last Christmas gift! ( won't be able to decide between a peg bag, a cushion or a shopper, I already know this.....)

  1. go the georgette heyers! they are such a great read, sassy heroines ending up with the right man, and all a bit tongue in cheek! but they are a quick read so you might need more........

(oh and ask Anna to get all the peg bags out of the cupboard for you to have a look at.....)

  4. I'm so excited for you!

I also loved "Too Many Men" but haven't read any other Lily Brett, I read Pompeii (for some research work) and it's not bad actually, but not a real "holiday" read. Sorry, but haven't read the others you mention. Oh.."I Capture The Castle" rocks!!

Maybe try Madeleine St John's "The Essence of the Thing" - an easy read with great wit and substance. Personally, any Sue Grafton novel (the Kinsey Millhone series) always works for me on planes.

    Enjoy!

  5. I read the Robert Harris one a couple of months ago. It's all about the young chap who runs the aqueduct that supplies Pompeii, just prior to the eruption. Great yarn!

  6. LOVE Georgette Heyer tho I haven't read that one. My fav is The Grand Sophy altho I really enjoyed Friday's Child as well.

my comfort reads are usually Rosamunde Pilcher's "big" books (Coming Home, September).

  7. Have to admit to not having read any of these. May have to put them in the TBR list.
I wondered if you had read Diana Gabaldron's series? That could be a good holiday read for you - although doorstopper size books - maybe good for lighting your load as you go.

  8. Georgette Heyer is a very comforting must, but try and find a few more maybe. For your return journey I recommend hunting the UK charity shops for anything by Alexander McCall Smith - The No1 Ladies Detective Agency (several in this series) and The world according to Bertie (3 or 4 of these) are delightful.

  10. Ok I've just looked at the Georgette Heyer's and seriously you want to read her regency romances, not the detective books. The Grand Sophy and Friday's Child and Cotillion are all fab as are Faro's Daughter, These Old Shades and Arabella. The detective stuff isn't nearly as good.
